As a long-time Bluesfest enthusiast, I couldn’t wait to experience the music, food, drink, art, and vibrant atmosphere with the residents of my community. Supporting local acts and reminiscingabout the music of the past while enjoying the nice day we had on August 24th seemed surreal. Thornetta Davis and her band highlighted the evening, and she did not disappoint. Witnessing her talent along with her young musicians was not only inspiring but served as a reminder of the power of music to shape and encourage the dreams of everybody going through life’s struggles as they exist today. I had the distinct pleasure of sitting in, as a guitar player, for the closing tune with the opening act for Thornetta Davis. Their name is “Tino G and The Dumpster Machine”. Earlier, in the month, I asked Tino if I could have a practice rehearsal before the show. He just looked at me and said, “it’s all in the key of “E” – just take your guitar, catch the vibe and “funk” it up!” Aye yai yai, they must really trust my guitar skills. So there I was, flying high without a parachute! I played my guitar like no one was watching and felt totally free. Not having a single thought of failing, but rather a feeling of being free! I then realized to myself that great things never came from comfort zones! Glad our Mayor, City Council and vendors (Nu-Appearance Maintenance, Anderson Eckstein & Westrick, SAFE built, and others who saw such great potential), unseen & unrehearsed, let this happen in Harper Woods!!
