Meet the Family Center

Who We Are:

The Family Center is led by staff and board members from diverse walks of life, professions, and areas of expertise — united in the commitment to help families grow stronger, more resilient, and connected to their community.

What We Do:

We are dedicated to supporting families in the Grosse Pointe and Harper Woods communities. Through every age and stage, we help people connect to programs and resources on a wide variety of topics important to families including family dynamics, parenting expertise, mental and physical wellbeing, trauma and grief, substance misuse prevention, and more.

The Family Center’s programs are free and often hosted in partnership with schools, libraries, and other community-minded establishments.

For services tailored to the needs of individual families, you can utilize our Association of Professionals. This collection of qualified providers, carefully selected to help families and individuals, includes respected practitioners, nonprofit organizations, local businesses and more.

Decades of Service.
Generations of Impact.

History:

Founded in 2000 by Diane Strickler, a pediatric nurse and social worker, The Family Center evolved out of the 1999 Grosse Pointe Youth Summit, where community leaders and educators gathered to explore ways to make our community more youth and family friendly. Our mission was to link parents and professionals to the resources needed to better understand childhood development, life transitions, family dynamics and the challenges faced by our youth as they matured in a rapidly-changing world. Over the years, we’ve grown to address community requests covering the full spectrum of family life.

In 2015, The Family Center earned a Grosse Pointe Chamber of Commerce Pointer of Distinction Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Activity. In 2020, we celebrated 20 years of serving our community, and we are proud to have been awarded the platinum seal of transparency from Guidestar/Candid in 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024.
