Out of Winter , Into Spring: Homeowner Tasks You’ll Be Glad You Did

As our cold winter season finally fades, spring is the ideal time for homeowners to check in on their homes and get ahead of seasonal maintenance.

Start indoors by preparing your heating and cooling systems. Replace your furnace and air-conditioning filters. For your A/C, inspect the outdoor condenser unit to clean away leaves, dirt, debris, etc. And a little spring cleaning for your vents and registers might be in order, too. Additionally, test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, and check any batteries that may need replacing after the colder months.

Take a walk around your home’s exterior. Inspect your roof, siding, and foundation for any damage caused by the winter elements. While you walk around, also check out your concrete walkways and driveway for cracks or uneven sections, and windows and doors for worn weatherstripping. Make sure you clean out your gutters and downspouts, too; ensure proper drainage for the rain, and double check that water is directed away from your foundation.

Prepare your yard.
Rake up the remaining debris, trim your shrubs and trees, and check your fence and deck for loose boards or rot. Early spring is also a good time to edge garden beds, refresh mulch, and reseed or aerate bare patches of your lawn. And if you use a sprinkler irrigation system, make sure you inspect it for leaks before turning it on for the season.

A little attention now can help prevent costly repairs later, and make your home more comfortable all year long!
